Dr. Manoel Galvao Neto earned his medical degree in 1989 from the Bahiana School of Medicine in Bahia, Brazil. He came to Bahia as an assistant professor of Surgery at Bahia School from 1993 to 1998 after completing a digestive surgery and endoscopic residency programme at the 9th of July Hospital in So Paulo, Brazil. He was the Coordinator of the Experimental Surgery Research Group from 1998 to 2000. Inspired by his father,
Dr. Manoel Galvao Filho, a surgeon who pioneered laparoscopic surgery in Brazil, and his mother, Stella, a top operating room nurse who defined his character, behaviour, and ethics. Dr. Galvao created video laparoscopic surgery models in rats using conventional instruments, which have been used to instruct over a thousand medical students. This work was submitted and defended as his Master’s Degree thesis at So Paulo University in 2003, demonstrating that medical students with no formal surgical training can execute laparoscopic surgeries in rats.

Dr. Galvao was the first to perform the following procedures: placement of the intragastric air balloon; endoscopic removal of the gastric band; transluminal surgery through natural orifices in animals, and the implant of an endoluminal endoscopic duodenal-jejunal bypass GI Sleeve® / EndoBarrier®, which is being examined by the FDA and CE.
